Sheath / Column Wedding Dresses

A sheath wedding dress is a narrow, column-like silhouette that follows the body's natural line from shoulder to hem without significant flaring or volume. It is the simplest and most architecturally restrained of all bridal silhouettes. The sheath differs from the mermaid in that it does not flare at the knee — the hemline remains close to the leg throughout. Related terms include column dress and slip dress, the latter referring specifically to a sheath cut from lightweight, lingerie-influenced fabrics such as charmeuse or bias-cut satin. Sheath gowns suit tall and lean frames most readily, though fabric choice and construction can adapt the silhouette to a wider range of proportions. They are strongly associated with minimalist and contemporary bridal aesthetics.
